Nigerian superstar Skales follows up his acclaimed single “Nobody 2 Somebody” with his hotly anticipated, monumental full-length project Sweet Distractions featuring a slew of esteemed talent including Davido, Rotimi, Stonebwoy, Imanse and Zoro
A multi-faceted artist boasting a catalogue swelling with a variety of songs that are steeped in the international rise of Afro-pop, Skales demonstrates his raw talent and versatility — serving up an immaculate eleven-track album of pure pop heat. With features from heavyweights such as Davido, Stonebwoy, Rotimi and Zoro, the Nigerian Afro-pop king spearheads his way through a plethora of dynamic soundtracks guaranteed to be a hit on any international dancefloor. From the gospel-tinged rock melodies of “Hope, Freedom & Love” to the more poignant feeler “Katapot” featuring the smooth lyricism of fellow singer-songwriter Zoro — Sweet Distractions act as a timely reminder of Skales’ innate ability to craft some of the most forward-thinking Afro-pop to date.
Much of the singer’s output in 2021 was a return to the pop hit-making form that has seen him ascend to the upper echelons of the genre. Songs like “Kayefi,” found him musing over the concept of finding romantic companionship while “This Your Body,” a Davido-featuring banger was a thesis on the delights of a partner’s body. However, the release of “I Dey Miss You,” a runway ballad with Imanse hinted at the beginning of a new attempt at capturing the joys of his life on wax.
Since making his big break in 2014 with “Shake Body”, the multi-award winning Skales has gone on to collaborate with international stars such as Major Lazer, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido as well as East African artiste, Harmonize. His music has captured fans around the globe, including in the UK where he has performed at the 12,000 capacity Wembley Arena – as well as reaching an ever-expanding audience through his feature on the trend setting soundtrack for Netflix’s hit show Sex Education.
With over 150M streams in total, Skales is one of Africa’s music heavyweights and he impresses once again on this introspective and inspirational feel-good project
