Disco, House and Funk trio, We Are Neurotic, release their latest track, ‘Hyperservice’. Following the release of ‘Hyperservice’, we got the opportunity to speak with the trio. Check out how this track came about, what tracks they currently have on repeat and what’s next for the guys.

Describe your sound in 5 words

Live, Energetic, Jazzy, Playful, Warm

Your upcoming release, ‘Hyperservice,’ has a lively vibe, perfect for energizing large crowds. How did this track come about?

(Jonathan Mono of We Are Neurotic)

For years now, since the pandemic, we’ve been living much of our lives online. We hit the studio after lunch, hang out on Discord servers, and immerse ourselves in music until exhaustion sets in.

We met 3kelves and Dylan C. Greene on the Disclosure Discord server, where we competed in weekly music production contests. We’ve all claimed the top spot at some point, and there was even a time when all the champions faced off, with Dylan coming out on top (earning him an official remix release of Disclosure’s “Never Enough”). Over time, we’ve come to understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses and have been collaborating on each other’s projects.

The creation of “Hyperservice” is a prime example of our daily routine back then. 3kelves had a 16-bar idea that he worked on in his San Francisco studio while we watched on our computer screens. Afterwards, he sent it over to me to add more live instrumentation and arrange the 16 bars into a full song. Our drummer Karel William immediately laid down the drum tracks as well. Matalino Siraj, a pianist from Indonesia who was always online on Discord, joined in to fill in a piano solo. Lino recorded it at his home in Cibubur, Indonesia, in just one take.

Around 8 PM Jakarta time, after 3kelves and and I exchanged recording session files a couple more times for the final touches, the song was finally completed. I vividly remember the days when 3kelves would leave the studio in San Francisco around 6 AM California time. We would still stay online after the session had ended; 3kelves still driving home, staying connected to Discord on his smartphone, replaying the demos on his car stereo.

Then, in late 2023, Dylan C. Greene and 3kelves came to Jakarta and stayed at my house for about three weeks for the first-ever C3DO member meeting. We decided that this song would be the label’s debut release. It has such a great ‘kick-in-the-door’ energy to it, that we figured it would be a great track to launch the label with.

Going through your catalogue, we found your remix of Disclosure’s ‘Higher Than Ever Before.’ How did this collaboration with 3kelves and Dylan Greene come about?

(Jonathan Mono of We Are Neurotic)

This happened when 3kelves and Dylan C. Greene flew to Jakarta, Indonesia, to stay for about three weeks at my house and work with We Are Neurotic in person. Before they arrived, the remix competition for Disclosure’s latest album, “Alchemy,” had been running weekly. Considering we met years earlier because of these competitions, we thought that it would be a full circle moment to collaboratively join in the competition’s final week and work on it together in the same room. We finished it in about three hours.

What three tracks are you currently enjoying the most?

3kelves’ “Nonsense,”

Dylan C. Greene’s “Fool Me,” (which will be out next month)

Our own “Hyperservice“.

What three festivals are on your bucket list to perform at?

Headlining Coachella, Glastonbury, and Fuji Rock would be amazing.

If you could collaborate with one DJ/Producer for the rest of eternity, who would it be and why?

Damon Albarn is always at the top of our list. His reputation precedes him for a reason and we think our musical style would blend very well with his unique production.

What’s next for We Are Neurotic?

Our collective, C3DO Recordings, is our main focus right now. We will be releasing a few more singles this year on our label, and are keeping busy making the next batch.
