Taking immense inspiration from the sounds of Northern nightlife, the Sheffield-born DJ, songwriter and producer sounds combine UK bass grit with the singalong bounce of club classics, bottling the effervescent spirit of mid-noughties bassline with solid songwriting. Following releases on influential underground labels, the 22 year old is gracing iconic imprint Locked On for his most ambitious undertaking yet – What About The DJ?, showcasing his innovative production style and feelgood musical approach.
Having teased the EP’s release over the space of five months, the projects five tracks show off varying sides of his sonic personality: The previously released title track mixes wobbling basslines and hearty kick drums with raucous flair, with distorted vocals fading into the track’s dark recesses to produce four minutes of nostalgic, pulse-raising flavour. Second single ‘Without U’, is a super-sweet UKG belter, drafting in the indelible talent of rising Bolton vocalist Megan Wroe that’s equally reminiscent as it worthy of T2 ‘Heartbroken’-style success. Third single ‘Songs of Praise’ loops in grime MC Capo Lee for a bumpy warper that boasts a dark, growling bassline, serving as the perfect backdrop for MC Capo Lee’s effortlessly slick lyricism. Focus track ‘Passion’, which Harry describes as a “tune that shows more of the housier side of my production” recalls early 2010s Disclosure with its hollow, stabbing bass and house-infused grooves, whilst final track ‘Rock 2 Da Beat’ introduces strobing, techo-like synths to round off proceedings with an infectiously gritty ode to bassline.
Speaking on the EP, Silva Bumpa says:
“Releasing ‘What About The DJ?‘ on Locked On Records is a dream come true. With this EP, I aimed to blend various genres, infuse heavy sampling, and deliver crunchy grooves that would make every listener feel the music in their core.”
Building on what is a watershed moment for the Sheffieldonian, Silva Bumpa’s marking the release with a very special upcoming ‘23 Degrees x Locked On Records’ live show taking place at East London’s Village Underground on Friday 31st May, with Megan Wroe joining to perform ‘Without U’ live for the first time, and remaining tickets available via RA.
Becoming synonymous with the exciting new forward-thinking sound of UK Garage, his sounds combine the grit of UK bass with the singalong bounce of club classics, he’s bottling the effervescent spirit of the 90s and noughties eras with a solid songwriting game. Following releases on influential underground labels Hardline, ec2a and ATW Records, the Sheffield artist is gracing iconic imprint Locked On for his most ambitious body of work yet – his debut EP ‘What About The DJ?’. Building on the success of what’s already recognised as a strong catalogue of releases, the 22 year old continues to make serious waves in the club scene. Making his Boiler Room debut in Liverpool alongside Skream and Benga in January, Silva Bumpa is in the midst of a trailblazing 2024, currently on his debut headline tour of Australia and New Zealand, with upcoming performances in Leeds (Mint Festival), London (23 Degrees x Locked On), Sheffield (Hope Works), Manchester and Croatia’s Outlook Festival (main stage) to name just a few.
Supported by peers including Interplanetary Criminal, Main Phase and Soul Mass Transit System, as well as bonafide bassline OGs such as Tom Shorterz, Big Ang and Joe Hunt, ‘What About The DJ?’ is only just the start for one of the Garage scene’s most exciting new prospects.
