First Word Records, a record label situated in London, has been ever present in the music space for a number of years.

Established in 2003, the label focuses on music derived from the Soul, Hip Hop genres, while also giving a platform to other genres such as Jazz.

First Word Records is the conclusion to founder, Aly Gillani not seeing an avenue for his taste in music, and deciding on birthing a platform from the ground up so that his preference in music had a platform to shine.

Since it’s insertion into the music universe, Artists such as, Children of Zeus, Allysha Joy and Kaidi Tatham have been housed at First Word Records.

With us now firmly into the flow of things for 2023, First Word Records have announced their intentions to welcome, New Sector Movements, to the FWR family.

Founded by IG Culture in the early 90s, New Sector Movements is a collection of broken beat artists.

Although IG Culture is considered a maestro when it comes to Jazz-fusion, funk and soul productions, New Sector Movements cover many bases of musical genres.

IG Culture has been a mainstay in Black British music for well over thirty years now. His touch can be seen on releases by Roots Manuva, Miraa May, Slum Village and Naughty By Nature.

As First Word Records welcome New Sector Movements to the family, they do so with the announcement of a group project titled, “These Times”.

“These Times” will be an EP consisting of 5 tracks, and will be featuring vocal talents such as Allysha Joy, Mike City and Natalie May.

With the EP boasting Soul, Hip Hop and Jazz vibes, we got the opportunity to check out the project and will be giving an honest assessment of the pending release.

Overall “These Times” is a good EP; you should definitely consider tuning in to this project once released.

We previously mentioned that IG Culture is considered a maestro at Jazz-Fusion, Funk and Soul sounds. Add this to the New Sector Movements being a collection of broken beat artists and you can hear all these sounds on the project.

Each track on this EP displays a fusion of sounds. It is impossible to hear one of these tracks and depict it as one genre. The bending of multiple sounds on one song, without there being any overpowering, is impressive.

Tracks like the EP’s namesake, “These Times”, features Allysha Joy, and seems to exhibit multiple sounds. Jazz and Hip Hop are the more prominent sounds at the forefront of the track, however there is a bit of a Soul vibe in the background.

If Jazz and Beat breaks are your thing, you need to be checking out, “H.E.A.T”. This track is led by vocalist, Natalie May and shows off a jazz inspired beat, with the broken beat sounds ever so present in the background. Fast paced for those who like their music at a higher tempo.

Keeping the sound upbeat and full of energy is a track titled, “Bless” and features the uplifting vocals of Mike City. A four four riddim incorporating the broken beat vibe, “Bless” will be those who admire a higher BPM.

A genre merging project, “These Times” does a perfect job of incorporating multiple sounds, while having none of said sounds compete for space on the tracks.

If you are familiar with New Sector Movements, you will not be let down by what you hear. If this project is your introduction to New Sector Movements, we suggest not only giving “These Times” a play, but checking out the entire back catalogue.
