With 40 years under his belt, David Rodigan has more than shown that class is permanent as year after year he has matched or surpassed his music sets, performances and energy from the previous year.
Known for bringing in the smoothest of Reggae and Dancehall music into our ears through many sound clashes, radio shows and DJ sets, it is fair to say that Mr Rodigan has done his share of delivering music and has more than deserved a break, but 40 years on and he will be doing more shows than your current favourite artists. With the much anticipated Eastern Electrics Festival just days away, we take a little dabble into the life of Uncle Rodigan.
Describing Reggae as a magnet that was impossible to resist, David Rodigan recalls how the music swept in from the West Indies and although it was hard in the beginning to understand all of the lyrics, the beats were just out of this world and were just too infectious to shake. With so much original music around to get his ears around, Rodigan knew from a young age he would be displaying all these sweet sounds to listeners and that came to fruition in 1978 with BBC Radio London being his first broadcasting break.
1983 saw the first clash of David Rodigans’ amazing career against Barry G that lasted 6 hours (can your favourite DJ clash for 6 hours? Didn’t think so!). This was the beginning of the many clashes Rodigan had. Clashes with Poison Dart in Antigua and Legendary Killamanjaro to Downbeat in New York and King Jammy at Reggae Jam 2017, there are loads of places around the world that have had David Rodigan spin someone in a clash.
Fast forward to the present years where dubs are instrumental in clashes and live sets are just what the fans crave, Rodigan is able to pull one of his many legendary dubs out of his locker and get a reload just a quick as anyone past or current. From Boiler Room to Parklife Festival, David Rodigan has broadcasted the sweet sounds of Reggae Music to millions of ears. With reload upon reload, guest appearances and just dope music, Rodigan has proven himself to be evergreen.
With Eastern Electrics in a few days expect to have your whole spirit captivated by beautiful sounds courtesy of Mr Rodigan who will be showing us all that class is indeed permanent.
