Exclusive Interview with Sharky Major

With Grime Original announcing their debut album, we got the opportunity to speak to speak to co founder and Grime legend, Sharky Major. A pioneer in Grime, we discuss the origin of Grime Originals as well as current Grime acts you need to have on your radar.

For those who may be unaware, who is Sharky Major?

One of the pioneers of the Grime genre. A co founding member of the sickest ever Grime collective, N.A.S.T.Y crew which included the likes of Marcus Nasty, Stormin, D Double E, Hyper, Jammer, Kano, Ghetts, Monkstar, Nasty Jack, Dj Mak 10 and more. Nowadays I own the brand Grime Originals and also manage and release music for artists under Major Muzik Entertainment ltd.

Describe your sound in 5 words.

Exceptional, Authentic, Versatile, Vibes, Lasting.

From music and events to clothing, Grime Originals is a serious brand with endless potential. How did the brand come about? (we’ve got G.O. merch, some of the strongest merch we’ve come across!)

I have always wanted to put on my own events and towards the end of 2016 I decided to give it a try and put the first one on in Q1 of 2017. I wondered what the scene was missing at the time as most events seemed not as lively as they used to. So I decided to go back to the original formula which made Grime the genre it is today. Live sets with less P.A’s. More about different greats and legends as well as the next generation of up and coming talent from around the country going back to back over whatever banger the DJ decides to play featuring some of the artists & dj’s many consider as.

I never knew what was gonna happen but I just knew it was what was missing from the grime events and from the success of the events, people now wear G.O Clothing as also now stream & download Grime

We’re feeling your recent release, “Baddest”, and the chilled-out vibe it delivers. What made you recruit Big Narstie, LV General and Rippz for this track?

I met Rippz outside of music and we quickly became friends. One day I showed him the beat produced by Zimzima and within a few minutes he had the chorus ready. I came up with my verse then had to decide if I was gonna keep it for myself or include it as part of the G.O album. Once I decided that it will be part of the album, I felt Big Narstie would be a sick feature so I hollered at him, linked up at studio and got it done. After that, just by chance, LV hollered saying he wants to get involved with performing on our sets at radio and live events but I just knew if I showed him Baddest he would love it and to me it made sense as he’s a funny personality with a huge following who mainly aren’t into Grime so it just made sense to me.

With the announcement of a Grime Originals album in the works, can you confirm any names set to feature on the project?

Apart from the names on Baddest, I can’t say any other names just yet but make sure you look out for the next single and follow us on all social media platforms.

The Grime Original shows look mad. We had tickets for a G.O. show during the Covid times, but it had to be rearranged and we couldn’t attend. When is the next show? As it’s an event we really want to get to!

We are aiming to put one more on this year if possible. If not, then will be Q1 of 2023.

What 5 Grime tracks do you feel everyone should know about? (old or current)

All old on this one lol

Lethal Bizzle – Pow

Wiley – Eskimo

Dizzee Rascal – I Luv U (original & remix featuring me & wiley)

Nasty Crew – Take You Out

Jammer – Destruction

What 3 Grime acts do you believe should be on everyone’s radar?

All new generation

Tommy B, Kruz Leone & Duppy

What you’ve done with Grime Originals is dope. What are the next steps for yourself and the brand?

Release the album early Q1 2023, put on more G.O events mainly outside of London, do some more festival stages and expand on the clothing line.
