Exclusive Interview with Mr Sosa

As he switches up the vibe with his latest release, Scarab, Mr Sosa reaches into the history of house for inspiration. Talking to us about the track itself, Mr Sosa also explains how Edinburgh based dance imprint, Fresh Take Records got their hands on the record for their vinyl series, Fresh Wax.

For our readers at home, who is Mr. Sosa

I grew up in Spain for a few years when I was younger and a lot of DJs would stop by on route to Ibiza, we’d sneak in and leave when the sun came up. Looking back now that probably had quite an impact experiencing that so young and set me on a journey to where I am now, making aesthetic noise that some people enjoy listening to.

What three words best describe your sound?

Moody, fresh and surreal.

We got the chance to check out your latest track, Scarab and are feeling how the song captures a specific time in music. How did this track come about?

It was inspired by the tv series Miami Vice which I absolutely love! Don Johnson’s boat was a Scarab and the series had an insanely good song selection. I definitely take a lot of influence from that music and that era in general. I actually made an EP full of inspiration from that show, maybe one day it will be released.

Going back to Scarab, we see it’s been released on Fresh Take Records. How did this relationship happen?

They were looking to press their first physical record and wanted artists who have been part of their journey from the start. I remember fresh take (under a different name) reaching out when I was first getting started and we put out a few releases. So I was more than happy to contribute a track to be part of their first vinyl.

What’s your three favourite non Mr. Sosa tracks?

Definitely impossible to pick 3 as I listen to a whole bunch of different music but choosing within a similar genre I’d say Bakara by Polo & Pan, Collide by Deetron and Lights Out by George Fitzgerald are all solid favourites that remain fresh as ever.

Who would be your dream producer to work with?

Jan Hammer 😉

We’ve seen you done a few mixes over the years. Where would be your ideal festival to perform ?

Creamfields. I used to go each year so would love to play there.

What’s next for Mr. Sosa?

I’m working on some big projects so expect a lot to come in 2022 and many gigs to come.
