Fresh before the launch of their EP ‘Together’ we sat down for an exclusive chat with the South London Duo to find out more about the upcoming EP, what it’s like being called one to watch by Annie Mac
Let our audience know, who are Jynx?
Jack and Pat from South London. Our mum’s were friends when we little but we didn’t really know each other. They had the same birthday.
How did the conversation come up to create Jynx?
I was teaching Pat how to make music for a couple of years after we spoke about it at a house party at his mum’s – he used to come up to Leeds where I was studying and spend days forcing me to show him how to make tunes. I then moved to London onto his floor and at that point I thought he was good and said we should start something together.
How does it feel to be tipped as a new name to watch by Annie Mac?
Yeah, good. Just need to keep the standard of tunes coming out high
We agree with Mixmag in saying Ember is a banger. How did this banger come about? What were the influences?
We got the vocal as a stem and then Jack started it in North Wales during a strange time with his ex. Then we just polished it off together. Pearson Sound, Burial, Wookie, James Blake etc
We a chance to listen to “New Love” and wow, what a track. what was the inspiration behind that one? so much going on in this one and we love it.
Singer/songwriter BB James came over to ours she banged out a really good song to an existing idea we had. We then butchered the shit out of it, cut it up loads and turned it into that organised mishmash.
How was it working with Ezi Emela? we got a chance to hear “Your Way” and love that track
It was a bit awkward the first day but the second one was bliss – we all came out of our shells by then and it was really great. We’ve worked with quite a lot of singers and that was one of our favourite sessions so far for sure
What are your musical inspirations?
Probably most notably UK garage/dubstep. Hessle Audio. Pat and I have quite different tastes personally though. I’m into lots of classical and he loves a lot of current pop acts
Whats in the Jynx pipeline for this year and the next?
Going to get two tunes we’ve been sitting on for a while “If You Really Want Someone” and “Together” out before christmas. Pressing some dubplates in a couple of weeks so we’ll see how that goes. Next year, just aiming to release a lot of music.
