Exclusive Interview With Juli Lee

Swim the Shine presents four new versions of his latest single ‘Stealth Mode‘ on his new recordand audio-visual arts platform Gun Raven. One of these versions comes courtesy of DJ & Producer, Juli Lee. With all versions garnering massive praise, we got the opportunity to speak with Juli about her version.

Let us in on who Juli Lee is.

I am a cloud & people loving maverick. I always felt I didn’t fit into any existing vessel…. That’s why at some point I gave up wanting to fit in and that was quite liberating. So I feel quite free every now & then.

Describe your sound in five words

Love for the detail, diversity, groove, minor-scales, unrecognisable nature sounds.

Your recent release comes in the shape of a remix, which has a naughty Deep House vibe to it. What was the inspiration behind this release?

When doing remixes, the material I get is my inspiration. If the original is not inspiring me in one way or the other, I can not do the remix. With this particular one, I felt like twisting the darker sounds a bit without taking away their depths. When the weather is rather gloomy, but then the clouds part for a moment and you see some blue sky. This was one of the pictures I had in my head

Being a founder of a music label is big! How did Klaus:elle and the collaboration with founders Pazkal & Nici Faerber come about?

It was during the pandemic when we started the label. We had been talking for a while that we wanted to get more electronic music from Switzerland heard outside the country. And during the pandemic we had a little more time and thought that there is a lot of music being produced right now that can’t all be released at once when it starts again….So a good moment to ask musicians if they have something nice for us to be released under klaus:elle.

What’s the favourite release to come out of Klaus:elle?

That would be a spoiler. But actually I am really very exited about every release. Otherwise I would do something wrong.

With you being a resident at Klaus Club in Zurich, we’re sure you know how to get people on their feet. We ask, do you have a dream event / festival you would love to DJ at?

I don’t have a specific dream event to be honest. I already played some pretty surreal gigs. Most of them were in a natural setting like in the desert, at a coast or up in the mountains at almost 4000m. But the magic moments can happen anywhere and depend on every single person in the room/space

If you had to fill a dance floor with only five tracks, what tracks would you choose, and why?

I would love to give you more concrete answers…but a floor filler in one place/time, can do exactly the opposite somewhere else…

Listening to some of your mixes, we’re digging the musical journey! What has been your favourite Juli Lee mix?

Thank you so much. I think my favourite mix was not recorded. I keep forgetting to record my mixes when I play…and no matter how smart or musical I try to record a podcast by myself…this music is created to be consumed in a collective…so I play better when I can enter the dialog with others through music.

What does the future hold for Juli Lee?

I am grateful to have absolutely no idea what the future holds for me. At the moment I have the feeling that I’m basically running in the right direction without really knowing where I’m going…but the individual steps feel good.
