Exclusive Interview With Ell Murphy

DJ & vocalist Ell Murphy has been making waves with her multi genre mixes and releases over the past 18 months. With her slated to be at this year’s Waterworks Festival on the 17th September, we got the opportunity to speak with her. We discussed her favourite tracks as well as her dream act to go B2B with and so much more.

For those among us who don’t know, who is Ell Murphy

I’m a singer and DJ from south east london – been DJing for the past 3 years and run my own label Jucey Tunes, aswell as being a resident on my local Balamii radio in Peckham & part of Team Woibey, Nitework. I started singing live over dj sets when I started my ukg duo Nitework with Medlar / and soon realised I could do it solo aswell – so it soon became a staple part of my sets.

Describe your sound in 5 words

fresh, soulful, euphoric, upbeat & anthemic

Your EP launch is in a few weeks (we’ll be there by the way!). What can people expect from this project?

This EP is my first collab with Club Glow’s Mani Festo and takes me into my first breaks and jungle release which I’m really excited for as it shows a different side to me as an artist. Most people know me through my garage releases but I’m keen to showcase my vocals on a wider range of genres in the realms of dance music  – so this is the start of that. The title track ‘Turning‘ is a deep, bassy breaks number – with B-Side ‘Dreamin” coming through on an ethereal jungle vibe – both really fun to perform live 🙂

We’ve heard some pretty sick mixes over the past couple of years. What has been your favourite Ell Murphy set?

Ah thank you! In terms of gigs, a stand out for me last year was one of the last times I played at the cause for a Feelings London night – My set was in the theatre so you’re directly level with the crowd and the energy was just amazing – everyone was dancing and jumping about with me for the whole set, so I felt really connected and it was a real moment for me as a DJ.

Gutted we missed your Seaside Beano set. Your calendar must be seriously rammed! Any Festival in particular you’re looking forward to this season?

Yeah it’s looking like a busy summer which is really exciting! There’s a few I’m really looking forward to – firstly my set at Westival playing for keep hush for the first time 🙂

And also Kala and Waterworks as they were on my bucket list last year as festivals to play!

Big fans of your release with Tuff Trax, “Close”. Ever since you’ve been on our radar, with some serious bangers! What is your favourite Ell Murphy track?

I think it has to be Hours with Stones Taro – as well as the incredible production by taro – that bassline! it’s one of my favourite hooks I’ve written and feel like I managed to capture that contemporary sound alongside that nostalgic 90s sound in the melodies

Who would be your dream act to go B2B with? (speak it into existence!)

Shanti Celeste would be amazing – big fan of hers!

What three non Ell tracks do you have on repeat right now?

Molasses – Nai Palm

Talk for hours – High vis

Tru – Hodge & Laurel Halo

Ell Murphy is one of the female DJs we’re eager to see at Waterworks
