His first release from his forthcoming album set for release this year.
A good-energy, mellow fusion of soul, hip-hop and jazz, the laid-back sonics of “Autopilot” bring a mellow vibe, whilst keeping a funk-infused backbone. With frank, understated song writing, David narrates the relatable snapshot of how it feels to lose track of where you are, reflecting on the need to take a break to reflect in such a situation. Taking inspiration from multiple genres, David’s hints toward disco and retro pop add a playful flavour to his contemporary sound, whilst maintaining a signature aesthetic that’s as accessible as it is seductive.
Considering David’s joyful tenacity, it’s no surprise that a purpose, both social and spiritual, drives everything he does. His grooves might be smooth, yet his lyrics address protest: politics, justice, and thinking outside the box to inspire actual social change. Considering our turbulent social and political climate, his message is particularly relevant. And he practices that which he preaches, cycling around on an electric bike, pulling a cart of gear between sets.
Accompanied by a music video set in the zen surroundings of a jungle temple, tranquil footage calls back to the serenity that was often searched for and found in these environments. Vignettes of bubbling water or fuzzy sunlit scenes, blend into the relaxed track, perfectly melding with the spirituality at the heart of his music.
Cutting his teeth by busking on the streets of Vancouver, David (a multi-instrumentalist) transferred the charisma and skills he learnt from turning strangers into fans, to performances with a trained live band. Amazed by the power these musicians added he says,
“It’s huge. When we were in that rehearsal space, I could just feel the energy, it’s so different than just listening to a track. When everybody gets into the groove and it’s super tight and we’re all getting really comfortable; all that in the moment playing all at the same time––it’s just a huge energy”.
Through the culmination of years of craft, his debut album Every Colour (produced by the award-winning Joby Baker) marked the beginning of an independent way of thinking and living that he hopes to share. Released via Bombay Records, David collected critical US acclaim from the likes of THE SOURCE, OKAY PLAYER, SOUL TRAIN and VIBE MAGAZINE, then later went on tour across the world, performing sets full of life and energy with his live band. With his new album slated for this year, the unorthodox, golden soundscapes David creates look set to deliver further column inches. A multi-talented musician and music maker, passionate about producing meaningful but hypnotic work, keep your eyes on David’s significant return to the sound sphere
